Posted: Updated:

It will now be harder to acquire inmates' mug shots from the West Virginia Regional Jail Authority website.

The ability to download mug shots directly from the website has been removed. A user now has to right-click on a photo's upper corner and manually save it.

Ali Dabiri with the state Office of Technology tells the Associated Press that the change is aimed at deterring a website called from profiting from the mug shots. contains mug shots and personal information of inmates from the state's 10 regional jails. Dabiri says the website charges people a $55 fee to remove the information.

Dabiri says the photos on the jail authority's website are under copyright. says it has a First Amendment right to publish public records.
