Ohio County officials Monday marked the beginning of Breast Cancer Awareness Month with a wreath hanging ceremony.
This marks the 18th annual West Virginia Breast Cancer Awareness Day and the event demonstrates a commitment to fighting the disease that has claimed so many women's lives.
Officials said more than 1,300 women are expected to be diagnosed with breast cancer in West Virginia this year.
Although mortality rates are decreasing, an estimated 294 West Virginia women will still die from the disease this year.
The goal of Breast Cancer Awareness Month is to increase awareness about the importance of early detection.
