City manager discusses next step in G.C. Murphy demolition

Posted: Updated:

The Main Street side of the old G.C. Murphy store was demolished Sunday in Wheeling.

Workers weakened the buildings steel supports with torches and tools. The small building next door was also demolished, but was not supposed to be torn down quite so soon.

City Manager Bob Herron says there is a lot of debris to sort and haul off-site, which may take a couple of weeks.

He says they will then move crews to Market Street and start the whole process again.

When it's all done, they'll have a site of almost an acre and a half of developable property in downtown Wheeling.

"We haven't decided exactly what we're going to be doing with it as far as landscaping, etc…," said Herron. "Once we get a better feel for what the site's going to look like, once the demolition's completed, we do have funds available through our tax increment financing program to put a fairly significant investment into sprucing this lot up, ultimately recognizing that the goal is to have new buildings put on this lot."
