No. 1 Hilltoppers Sizzle in Puerto Rico

Posted: Updated:

The No. 1 West Liberty University men's basketball team put on a show in its first trip to the Caribbean here Monday afternoon.

Coach Jim Crutchfield's high-flying Hilltoppers put eight players in double figures and scored a season-high 143 points in a 143-77 blowout of Puerto Rico-Mayaguez in the second game of an NCAA Division II doubleheader on the campus of Puerto Rico-Bayamon.
Seton Hill knocked off host UPR-Bayamon, 62-56, in the opener.
West Liberty (9-0) wasted little time taking care of business against the out manned Tarzans (2-6). All-American Alex Falk scored the Hilltoppers' first 12 points before Tim Hausfeld lobbed in a 3-pointer for a 15-5 WLU lead less than 4 minutes after the opening tip.
Shooting better than 60 percent from the floor – including a 10-of-19 showing from behind the 3-point arc – while forcing 20 UPR-Mayaguez turnovers in the first half alone, West Liberty pushed the margin to 47-11 on a Bubby Goodwin 3-pointer as the clock ticked past the 10-minute mark. The margin stretched as high as 50 points before WLU settled for an 84-38 halftime lead.
The Hilltoppers led by as many as 68 points in the second half as the Black and Gold coasted into the winners circle.
Seger Bonifant led the West Liberty scoring parade with 20 points – on 7-of-7 shooting from the floor – while Shawn Dyer notched the first double-double of his career with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Falk and Nick Brown finished with 18 and 17 points, respectively, while Keene Cockburn added 15 points. C.J. Hester and Mike Lamberti tossed in 13 points each while Jeff Yunetz rounded out the double-figure scorers with 10 points.
Julian Rodriguez and Mario Diaz paced UPR-Mayaguez with 18 and 17 points, respectively.
West Liberty closes out its Caribbean adventure on Tuesday when the Hilltoppers return to the UPR-Bayamon gym to take on host UPR-Bayamon in a 6 p.m. game.
