Steubenville Authorities Launch Website to Fight Rumors

Posted: Updated:

According to authorities the goal of the website, steubenvillefacts.org, is to share the most accurate information regarding a most recent case of sexual assault charges pending against two juveniles. City officials will update the website with new information as it becomes available.

City Manager Cathy Davison introduced the website. She indicated the website lists a timeline of how the Steubenville Police Department handled the case and that the purpose of the site is to disseminate any and all rumors regarding the case.

Angela Suggs, a city council member for Steubenville's fourth ward, encouraged people to come to council meetings to remain informed. Jodi Scheetz, from the ALIVE Shelter in Steubenville, said the shelter is a resource for people who have been victim of sexual and domestic violence in the city.

Police Chief Bill McCafferty also spoke, saying they have the video as evidence, but that he cannot discuss the video or the case before it goes to trial.

"The website is to correct misinformation and I am doing my best to protect citizens from harassment," McCafferty said.

At the press conference all officials recognized the right to peaceful protest.

According to the 7News crew at the scene hundreds of people are already occupying the steps of the courthouse and they are continuing to arrive.

Steubenville City Manager Cathy Davison, Police Chief Bill McCafferty and other officials will hold a press conference starting at 11 a.m. Saturday in the City Council Chambers.

Authorities say they will discuss some of the background on the case, which has caught the attention of the nation through social media and most recently national networks, and introduce a new informational website.

The press conference will take place about an hour before the second planned Occupy Steubenville rally, which is expected to have a massive number of people in attendance. To view the rally live click here.
