It was a story that tugged at the heart strings of nearly every sports fan but now it appears the story of Manti Teo overcoming the death of his girlfriend to be a hoax.
Wednesday night, the sports journalism site, Deadspin, first broke the story about the Notre Dame Linebacker after some parts of his emotional story didn't add up.
Teo's alleged girlfriend Lennay, a Stanford graduate, had passed away from leukemia hours before Teo's game against Michigan State on September 15th. However, Deadspin discovered there was no death certificate for her and Stanford had no record of her being a student.
The University of Notre Dame said the Teo family came forward and claim Manti was a victim of a hoax.
The Notre Dame Linebacker released this statement late yesterday after Deadspin broke the story: "To realize that I was the victim of what was apparently someone's sick joke and constant lies was, and is, painful and humiliating. In retrospect, I obviously should have been much more cautious. If anything good comes of this, I hope it is that others will be far more guarded when they engage with people online than I was."
