Nationally Recognized Expert Presents "Bully-Proofing Youth" in Wheeling

Posted: Updated:

The recent push to prevent bullying in local schools has always been focused on the children, but now parents are getting involved. A bullying prevention seminar called "Bully-Proofing Youth" was aimed at helping parents empower their kids.

The program for parents focused on how they can help their children eliminate bullying from their lives by empowering them at home. The program was open to the public and held at Wheeling Country Day School on Wednesday evening.

Nationally recognized presenter, Jim Bisenius, is also an award winning child therapist. He taught parents how bullies isolate, control and manipulate their peers, as well as exactly what steps their sons or daughters have to take to stop it.

Liz Hofreuter- Landini and Cathy Monteroso are both parents and educators.

"I think one of the things Jim says that I find so important is that you can't step on the field with your child," Liz says. "You can coach your child, but you'll never be there with that child every minute of the day, and we're not supposed to be. We're supposed to be supporting our kids so they can grow up."

Cathy says "I think the biggest thing is empowering students, and empowering the people that are being bullied."

The bullying prevention tips given were aimed toward students grades 1-12.

Main Street Bank, United Bank, and West Liberty University were sponsors of Wednesday's presentation, and helped make it free and open to the public.
