The Education Elevators Program, which has a goal of elevating students' aspirations, will celebrate its fifth anniversary Feb. 28, Jackson Kelly, a West Virginia law firm, recently announced.

Since 2008, Jackson Kelly has worked in partnership with Piedmont Elementary School in Charleston, matching students with mentors known as "Elevators."

The program was created and spearheaded by Jackson Kelly attorney Thomas McJunkin, who died in 2011.

Elevators should not be confused with tutors, however. Although activities incorporate academics and elements to increase self-esteem, students have done everything from creating videos, making robots and learning new languages in their weekly 30-minute sessions.

The program also incorporates a career day where fifth graders take tours of the Jackson Kelly office. Students learn about all aspects of a law firm, not just lawyers.

"Piedmont is one of West Virginia's most culturally diverse public schools," the law firm's news release states. "Nearly 90 percent of Piedmont students qualify for free or reduced lunch assistance."
