No matter where you go in the village of Shadyside, Ohio and no matter what generation you ask, there's not too many who don't know the name Mr. Ponzo.
As a community mourns the loss of a legend, of a man who spent decades devoted to the band he loved, years spent teaching, touching lives far outside the Shadyside City Limits.
In a town drenched with tradition, one man is in the center of it. For many he stands for what Shadyside is.
From leading "Ray's Band," for 30 years, to coaching basketball, keeping stats, announcing games, substitute teaching and taking senior pictures, there aren't too many who didn't know Mr. Ponzo.
Just this past fall he was able to lead a band filled with members from countless generations of students and even family members who had the opportunity to learn from the best.
In his passing, family members are asking that instead of sending flowers you donate to the Betty Ponzo Fund in which Ray's name will be added at the First National Bank in Shadyside.
