Greenbrier Valley Theatre opens season with ‘Doubt'

Posted: Updated:

Greenbrier Valley Theatre will kick off its 2013 professional season with the play "Doubt: A Parable," by John Patrick Shanley. The play will run April 11-13, 18-20 at 7:30 p.m. and a matinée performance on April 20 at 2 p.m.

The play premiered off Broadway in 2004 before moving on to a run on Broadway in 2005. It not only was the most celebrated play of the season, winning four Tony Awards, as well as a number of new play and critics' awards, but also secured the 2005 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. "Doubt" marked the first of playwright John Patrick Shanley's plays to be produced on Broadway.

In the introduction to the play, Shanley himself says, "We are living in a courtroom culture. … We are living in a culture of extreme advocacy, of confrontation, of judgment, and of verdict. Discussion has given way to debate. Communication has become a contest of wills. … Why? Maybe it's deep down under the chatter we have come to a place where we know that we don't know … anything. But nobody's willing to say that."

The ultimate themes of the play, Briggs says, are the concepts of certainty and doubt and how the lines between those two things should be blurred more often.

Tickets are $24 for adults, $21 for seniors, and $18 for students and children. For tickets or information, call the GVT Box Office at 304-645-3838.
