Local Servers and Bartenders Learn Responsible Alcohol Serving


Carole Sheerbaum from West Virginia University Extension Service presented Training for Intervention Procedures to bartenders and servers of Brooke and Hancock Counties.

During this class, she taught how to recognize signs of intoxication, being able to work with guests to promote good customer service and a sociable atmosphere as well as getting guests home safely.

"The whole premise behind TIPs is not drunk driving, the problem is people getting drunk. So if people are not getting drunk they're less likely to get hurt. They're less likely to get into an alcohol related accident," says Sheerbaum.

"People are learning how to observe people when to cut them off it's a good thing for the community we are happy to do it," says Bill Colley Wellsburg Moose Administrator.

Sheerbaum has been teaching TIPS for 10 years now. She says a lot of people who have taken her class really open up and share their experiences and are excited to learn new information.

In the end, all the bartenders just want to make sure their guests have fun but make it home safely.
