Residents Pack Chambers, Voice Concerns for Public Forum

Posted: Updated:

It was standing-room only for a public forum held before Wheeling City Council on Tuesday night.

It was the last opportunity for residents to show their support, or disdain, of the upcoming budget that would include major funding changes to the city's Community Development Block Grant.

The proposed budget includes dropping funding to the Human Rights Commission and continuing funding for the Wheeling HealthRight.

Supporters for both nonprofit agencies gave emotional pleas to council to not cut funds for either group.

One Wheeling resident told council HealthRight helped him recover from a disease that could have killed him. He said that Wheeling HealthRight has earned their right to help people.

Wheeling City Council will have final approval of the budget in May.

Also filling the council meeting were residents continuing to fight against the chance of a waste water plant being built at in Warwood.

Residents, including kids, showed signs of support for the community and against the plant.

A community rally is planned for Sunday, April 21. Starting at 1 p.m., there will be a march from where the proposed plant will be located to Garden Park where an Earth Day rally will be held.

There will be information available, children's activities and music.
