W.Va. Gobbler Season Starts Monday

Posted: Updated:

SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - West Virginia's four-week spring gobbler hunting season opens Monday.

The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources reminds hunters they are limited to one bearded turkey per day and two per season.

Curtis Taylor of the division's Wildlife Resources Section says last spring's harvest was down to just over 8,300 birds as snow made hunting more difficult. He says if the weather cooperates, a more typical harvest of about 9,000 is expected this spring.

The kids are getting the first crack at the state's turkey population. A special 1-day gobbler hunt for hunters 15 to 17 years old was underway Saturday.
