Canada awards patent to Marshall researchers

Posted: Updated:

HUNTINGTON, WV (AP) — Canada has awarded a patent for a railroad inspection system developed by two Marshall University professors.

Marshall said Monday that the patent is the first awarded by Canada for an invention developed at the university. The U.S. awarded a patent for the system in 2012.

The system developed by engineering professors Richard Begley and Tony Szwilski measures track problems with a combination of GPS devices, ground penetrating radar and cameras.

Begley and Szilski say their system will improve the safety and accuracy of track inspections.
