Absalom No-Hitter Highlights Wild Day of Softball Finals


St.Johns Central sophomore pitcher Hannah Absalom tossed a no-hitter and struck out 10 Bishop Donahue hitters in an 8-0 win in the OVAC Class A championship game at the I-470 Chambers Complex.

Absalom also had two hits and drove in two runs as the Irish repeat as Class A champions.

The Class 4A Final between defending champion Buckeye Local and Harrison Central was a fantastic finish.  The Huskies scored the tying run in the bottom of the 6th inning on a wild pitch, but Karlee Leonard singled in Alijah Marielli with the go-ahead run in the to of the seventh to win a second consecutive 4A championship for the Lady Panthers.

Steubenville Catholic Central denied Wheeling Central a third straight Class 2A championship with a come-from-behind 8-7 win over the Lady Maroon Knights, who once had a 6-2 lead in the middle innings.  A two-run throwing error by pitcher Sarah Henry allowed the tying runs to score in the bottom of the seventh, before Maddie Gulan ended the game with a walk-off hit, scoring Sammi Giannimore.

The 3A championship went to undefeated Fort Frye (18-0) after to a 1-0 victory over Bellaire.  Senior pitcher Victoria Mimkem struck out 16 Reds, and drove in the winning run with an RBI single in the fourth inning.  It's Fort Frye's second OVAC softball championship (2010).
