Powhatan Man Facing Child Pornography Charges Appears in Court, Has Bond Lowered

Posted: Updated:

A Powhatan man charged with 20 counts of illegal use of a minor in nudity-oriented materials had his first day in court on Monday, May 6.

At 7:30 a.m. Monday, 39-year-old David Curtis Crawford went before Judge John Vavra of the Eastern Division Court, by video arraignment from the jail.

Court officials say his bond was lowered from $300,000 to $150,000, and his preliminary hearing was set for next Thursday.

Investigators say they found audio and video recording devices in his home, as well as alleged child pornography.

A Powhatan man is in the Belmont County jail, charged with 20 counts of illegal use of a minor in nudity-oriented materials.

Chief of the Sexual Predator Internet Initiative Task Force, Jeremy Campbell, got a call from a citizen, reporting child pornography in Powhatan.

Chief Campbell, along with Detective Ryan Allar and Detective Andrea Gatti of the Belmont County Sheriff's Department, went to the suspect's home. They say they then discovered audio and video devices and material that was reportedly child pornography at the home of David Curtis Crawford. After interviewing the 38-year-old Crawford, they arrested him.

Sheriff David Lucas said he is pleased they got this suspect off the streets.

"... With 20 counts, you know this shows repetition here, recurrence, so that's why it's important," said the sheriff. "That's why we have the SPII Task Force for cases like that, when we do get information and we do get leads, we move together in a joint effort, responsibly and quickly."

The sheriff says the victims whose images were used in the material were local children. Authorities are not disclosing their ages or genders, but they say they are all children from Belmont County.

Crawford remains in the Belmont County Jail in lieu of a $300,000 bond.
