An event that started during West Virginia's Centennial celebration is about to see the state's Sesquicentennial mark too.

West Virginia's oldest heritage fair, the Mountain State Art and Craft Fair, turns 50 this year. It's scheduled for Thursday, July 4 through Saturday, July 6 this year at Cedar Lakes Conference Center in Ripley.

The fair brought in more than 6,500 people its first year, and it's been growing ever since. This year's event will have hundreds of juried artisans demonstrating and selling their wares and along with traditional Appalachian music, food, heritage events and family activities.

"Artisans who exhibit at the fair are selected by a jury of craft experts and all hail from the Appalachian region," MSACF President Jan Sizemore said in a news release. "All products represent some form of traditional or contemporary Appalachian arts and crafts."

Interactive artisan booths for visitors to craft will include broom making, basket weaving and stained glass workshops. This year's festival will feature a Civil War encampment, a youth fishing derby and the Firecracker Chili Cookoff.

The fair's headlining musical act is the Davisson Brothers Band.
