CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — The American Red Cross continues to assist Roane County residents following severe flooding brought on by a massive storm.

A shelter that had been in place since Thursday's storm was expected to transition into a service center on Saturday to house supplies and give workers a place to help homeowners fill out paperwork to get assistance.

As of Friday night, the organization had given out more than 1,200 meals and 2,500 snacks to residents and first responders. It had distributed more than 100 cleanup kits to those whose homes were flooded.

American Red Cross West Virginia Region CEO Erica Mani said in a release Saturday that the organization will remain in place in Roane County as long as needed to help residents.

Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin said Friday that on the floods had washed away one lane of Route 119, damaged at least 100 homes and left behind an "astounding" amount of debris.

Dozens of West Virginia National Guard members are in the area to help with cleanup.
