"Ride With Pride" Volunteers Assist Easter Seals

Posted: Updated:

Children with disabilities are getting the chance to expand their horizons thanks to the "Ride with Pride" program.

Volunteers work together with Easter Seals to give those children with varying special needs the opportunity to ride on a horse.  By using specific exercises to build muscle tone, control, and balance - the children receive benefits from working with the horses - both physically and emotionally.

Mary K. McCongahy, an Easter Seals volunteer, said, "The progress that they make every year is amazing to watch.  When they first come, they're usually very shy and barely want to even make eye contact with us.  And by the sixth or seventh week, they're outgoing, and actually like to participate in the exercises."

McCongahy adds the volunteer work lets her combine a love of horses - with giving back to the community.
