As Appalachian coal production continues its drastic decline, West Virginia’s coal-producing counties are  not only losing people as lifelong residents are forced to flee their homes in order to find work, but in many cases, they’re also relinquishing millions of dollars from their budgets.

As Appalachian coal production continues its drastic decline, West Virginia’s coal-producing counties are  not only losing people as lifelong residents are forced to flee their homes in order to find work, but in many cases, they’re also relinquishing millions of dollars from their budgets.

Adverse geological conditions surprised miners at a Pennsylvania mine, forcing Alpha Natural Resources to idle the mine.

Cumberland Coal Resources LP, a subsidiary of Alpha Natural Resources, temporarily suspended production July 15 due to "adverse geological conditions in the mine's headgate area." The underground longwall mine is located in Greene County, Pa.

While the employees of the mine will continue to work at the site to mitigate the geologic conditions that idled the mine, shipments from the site have ceased. According to a release from the company, management anticipate it will be several weeks before production continues.

The mine's workforce will be temporarily reduced while the longwall is brought back into operations.
