A woman identifying herself as the wife of the tractor-trailer driver contacted 7News. She asserts that a woman in a pickup truck in part caused the accident.
7News checked on this tip with the Wheeling Police Department. According to them, a woman driver in a white pickup truck had come to a complete stop in a construction zone. The driver of the tractor-trailer apparently had no choice except to brake. Upon the panic braking, the load shifted, and went all over the highway.
Wheeling Police say the driver had about 45,000 pounds of granite and marble on the trailer. Its estimated value was somewhere around $100,000.
What was raw material for granite and marble kitchen countertops has become trash for a landfill.
Around 7 p.m. Wednesday evening, a tractor-trailer carrying stacks of raw material for granite and marble countertop slabs lost its load on I-70 westbound in Wheeling. Crews at the scene said fortune smiled on motorists, because none were close enough to get hit by the heavy slabs of rock as they came off the trailer.
The Ohio driver of the tractor-trailer had been returning from New Jersey to his home base with the load.
