Crew Repossessing Vehicle Alert Authorities to Alleged Case of Animal Neglect in Bloomingdale

Posted: Updated:

Dozens of animals were removed from a Bloomingdale home on Thursday after a crew repossessing a vehicle alerted authorities to possible cases of animal neglect.

Authorities arrived at the home on Township Road 204 after receiving the call around 1 p.m. on Thursday. When they arrived, they immediately called for back-up from the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department. Authorities reportedly found 19 dogs, 12 chickens and 3 goats on the property. They removed four of the dogs and five puppies from the property, who were all  reportedly anemic and covered in fleas. The owners of the property reportedly said they were unaware they even had puppies.

Authorities say the animals had no food or water. They said the property owner told them he fed the animals "a few days ago." The man reportedly stated his fiancé "doesn't believe in spaying and neutering," and that they originally started with two dogs.

Charges against the couple are pending. Officials say they will find a local farm to take the chickens and goats after the case is prosecuted. The dogs will be available for adoption through Jefferson County Humane Society.
