WHEELING, WV (AP) -

Catholic Charities West Virginia says it's opening a hospitality house in Wheeling to help the homeless in the Northern Panhandle.

The Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston purchased a single-family home next to Catholic Charities' Neighborhood Center and renovated it under a grant from The Community Foundation of the Ohio Valley.

Bishop Michael Bransfield will dedicate the house Oct. 29.

Charities official P.J. Reindel says a lack of stable, affordable family housing is one of the things keeping many families in poverty.

The hospitality house will give Catholic Charities the flexibility to work with a family in need and help it achieve self-sufficiency.

Reindel says families can stay as long as six months as they work with social-service agencies offering help with education, child care, transportation, financial counseling, clothing and mentoring.
