Youngstown Cardinal Mooney proved too strong, overpowering Steubenville Big Red in the Division IV State Semifinal at Canton's Fawcett Stadium by the final score of 37-7.
The Cardinals led 14-0 after one quarter, on a quarterback Jon Saadey one-yard touchdown plunge, and a 39-yard interception return for touchdown by Mark Handel.
A pair of Zak Kennedy field goals gave Mooney a 20-0 halftime lead, and a C.J. Amill 10-yard touchdown run made it 27-0 in the third quarter.
Steubenville avoided the shutout when sophomore running back Johnnie Blue ran in for a seven-yard touchdown in the third quarter. Blue, the hero of last week's regional championship game win over Indian Valley, carried the ball 14 times for 69 yards and a score.
A third Kennedy field goal, and another Saadey short touchdown run in the fourth quarter, completed the scoring.
Steubenville's magical playoff run ends, and the season is over with a record of 9-5. It marks the first time Big Red lost five games in a season since 1998(4-6).
Mooney (10-4) advances to the state championship game next weekend against Clinton-Massie (13-1).
