No.1 Weirton Madonna capped a 14-0 season with a 24-14 win over No.7 Greenbrier West in the Class A state championship game at a frigid Wheeling Island Stadium. The victory gave Madonna its third state football championship in school history.
Madonna senior quarterback Ross Comis went out in style, running for 141 yards on 34 carries and a touchdown, and passing for 131 yards, completing six of eight passes, including two touchdowns. Comis finishes his brilliant career as the holder of virtually every offensive school-record. He finished with 119 total touchdowns (70 rushing, 49 passing). Comis connected with senior wideout Will Bower for a pair of scores from 42 and 35 yards respectively, and was named MVP.
Blue Dons kicker Matt Green booted his first field goal of the season, a 22-yarder, to give the Blue Dons a 10-point lead with 6:12 left.
The Cavaliers were led by senior quarterback Malik Boatwright, who picked up 64 yards on 24 carries and a touchdown. Senior Cory Cox had a three-yard touchdown run. The Cavaliers end the season with a 12-2 record.
