Low Temperatures Mean Surfaces Freeze And Drivers Need To Take Precautions

Posted: Updated:

Accidents were happening all over the Ohio Valley.

Vehicles were sliding into ditches, or into other vehicles.

And even with no additional snow, with temperatures dropping into the teens,  that means slippery conditions.

The post commander of the Ohio State Highway Patrol in St. Clairsville urges drivers to make adjustments according to the conditions.

"With the temperature dropping so low, obviously spots that were wet during the day are going to freeze up at night so you have to be prepared for icy spots which may not have been there earlier," said Lt. Jeff LaRoche.

He urges all drivers to prepare for any trip by putting together a simple emergency kit.

"You should have a blanket, a cell phone, a charger for the phone, a bottle of water, energy snacks, a small shovel, flares, even "HELP" signs in case you get stranded," LaRoche noted.

The highway patrol also suggests carrying tire chains, non-clumping kitty litter and extra windshield solvent.

And of course, always carry a windshield scraper.
