Ever stop to wonder why January makes you sit up and take notice of your health despite the fact you hadn't given it a thought since who knows when? Well, no worries — we can all relate to this very human behavior. Remember in college pulling all-nighters before a test? Sure you do. It's just our nature not to worry until we are face-to-face with reality, and reality is never more real than at the start of a new year. That's when we are all surrounded by those who are making it known that THIS YEAR is going to be the year for health.

So, we begin a quest to eat less, move more and finally be in charge of our destiny. Great plan, and this year you pledge an eternal commitment toward a better you. 

But then there are the holidays

Why must the time we are all shored up and dedicated collide with the time when everyone invites us to the best parties overflowing with great food, friends and legal beverages? It's not right, but like clockwork, it happens every year. 

As December unfolds, we find ourselves shopping, baking, working and celebrating by day but later, the nightly scolding for our digressions begins. We decide it's just too difficult to be good during this time of the year so we cave and figure we'll be better later. 

What if …

What if it didn't have to be impossible? What if we didn't have to make Herculean health efforts? Hmmm — maybe that could work! Below are some more December-acceptable ways and tips to help you hang in there until the New Year. 

Random acts of fitness


  • Realize you need to balance the good with the bad and therefore track your efforts. Do something good each day. Put athletic clothes on and start moving, even if it is only for 10 minutes. You'll be surprised how once you put your body in motion, how easy it is to be active for at least 30 minutes.
  • Enter each day mindful of all the temptations you will face. Plan to stay ahead of them. Walk in the morning, at lunch or after work.
  • Here comes the random … just do it! Do 25 push-ups, squats or lunges.
  • Household chores — transform work around the house into an epic challenge. Use a stopwatch to time mundane chores and make them work for you for a change.
  • Let stairs be a gift to you. Greet them with a smile and imagine a fabulous prize at the top. You know you can conquer those steps. Count them out loud and check the box for today's activity.
  • Remember you carry all you need to work out with you every moment of the day. It's called body weight exercise. Planks, squats, plyometric movement and pull-ups are the most effective exercises you can ever do. Five minutes here and there in a busy day will make all the difference. 


When all is said and done, if you just focus on half of these over the course of December, you will be ahead of the game. It's up to you to get a healthy jump on the New Year and it's an easier battle to win than you imagine … so just do it!
