An elf performs during the Christmas Spectacular at The American Mountain Theater
ELKINS, WV -
Winter doesn't cool down tourism season in Elkins. Situated in the middle of West Virginia's ski country, the Randolph County city offers several entertainment opportunities.
Snowshoe, Timberline Four Seasons Resort and Canaan Valley Resort and Conference Center are located within an hour's drive of Elkins. It makes for a full weekend of activities, according to Brenda Pritt of the Randolph County Convention & Visitor's Bureau.
"It's just in the right place for winter activity," Pritt said. "They ski or go tubing at the resorts during the day and come back to Elkins in the evening. It's just a nice, quiet hometown with lots of things to do and keep you busy."
Elkins has two Branson-style entertainment venues with The American Mountain Theater and Gandy Dancer Theatre and Conference Center.
"You can take in both shows in a weekend," she said. "The entertainment and variety compares to Branson or anywhere you would want to go. I have not heard anyone say they were disappointed and it's inexpensive."
Gandy Dancer has dinner and a show on Friday and Saturday evenings for less than $40 per person. AMT's popular Christmas Spectacular is on stage Wednesday through Sunday evenings until Dec. 22. They offer an overnight package that includes accommodations at the Isaac Jackson Hotel, breakfast, dinner at the 1863 Restaurant and tickets to the show.
Meggan Sexton, vice president of operations, says the show is frequently sold out.
"We have a lot of new material this year, but we also bring back some of the fan favorites that they ask for every year. It puts audiences in the Christmas spirit."
History buffs might prefer a visit to nearby Beverly, which features a Civil War era museum with a holiday theme. Another lodging option is Graceland on the campus of Davis & Elkins College. The one-time summer home of Sen. Henry Gassaway Davis, the rooms of the historic inn feature antiques and Victorian-era reproductions.
"There's a beautiful view overlooking downtown Elkins from the veranda," Pritt noted.
