A story that tugged at the heart strings of the judges of a national competition won the Hancock County Animal Shelter thousands of dollars to use for food and more.

The Petco Foundation granted $500,000 to more than 30 animal welfare organization across the country through a campaign in which shelters would share their adoption stories.

The Hancock County Animal Shelter's story, "Circle of Love," chronicled the journey of an injured dog named Lieutenant Dan. Here's what happened: a local child went searching for her missing dog and ended up with not one, but two furry blessings. It was at that shelter she met Lt. Dan and learned both the dog and herself had been hit by cars, and both of them had hurt their legs.

The story of Lieutenant Dan was one of 33 winning stories chosen in the grant competition, which drew 4,500 applications from across the United States.
