Belmont County Humane Officer Seizes 11 Horses, Donkey in Powhatan
The Belmont County Humane Officer had received several complaints about malnourished horses at a home on Town Hill Road in Powhatan Point, and on Sunday, those horses and a miniature donkey were seized.
Volunteers helped round up the horses, but after three were put into trailers, the rest did not cooperate. A humane officer on the scene said the horses were not receiving the proper care during breeding, were not being fed the proper amount of hay, and were not receiving any veterinary care or farrier care for their hooves.
"This winter has been very difficult for livestock even for people who properly care for their animals, said Mandy Lewis, the Belmont County Humane Officer. "We have just had call after call. On cases like this where they just refuse to properly care for their horses and if you can't care for them, then don't have them."
All together, 11 horses and one miniature donkey were taken from the Powhatan Point residence. For the time being, the animals were taken to an undisclosed location that has worked with Belmont County before in similar cases.
