Local Authorities Running Out of K-9 Training Locations

Posted: Updated:

Local law enforcement are in need of new space to use for K-9 training.

Locations are few and far between, according to Cpl. Doug Howell, a K-9 handler with the Wheeling Police Department. Together, Wheeling Police and the Ohio County Sheriff's Department have eight K-9s. Currently, they have four buildings to use for monthly training sessions, but those four places are now becoming too familiar to the dogs.

They are looking for buildings with unused space, small or large.

"We can't have too many places to train, with having eight dogs, sometimes we'll have nine or ten dogs if other dogs come from different agencies," Howell said. "Then it's a long day if we have the same location all day long."

Officers train twice a month, in eight hour sessions. At the moment, they use Ace Garage in Fulton, Budget Rental in South Wheeling, the Nelson Jordan Center and the old Warwood Middle School.

They say they can use anything from a house to a warehouse or car lots.

The Wheeling Police Department can be reached at 304-234-3661 and the Ohio County Sheriff's Department can be reached at 304-234-3688.
