Local Leaders Debating Raising Taxes on Shale and Gas Drillers

Posted: Updated:

The Ohio legislature is debating a bill that would raise the taxes on oil and gas drillers across the state.

The present bill provides income tax cuts for all Ohioans, but many leaders in eastern Ohio feel some of that money needs to come back to eastern Ohio for infrastructure improvements and repairs.

State Senator Lou Gentile is leading that charge for improvements in the Ohio shale fields. "What I've heard from many of the leaders in our area is we're going to have a great need," Gentile said. "We don't want to be back in the situation where we boom then bust. We want to establish a legacy fund that will reinvest those funds back into the area."

The legislature hopes to replace a failed tax plan proposed by Gov. John Kasich last year. The new package would generate an estimated $2 billion over 10 years.
