WV DEP says 'licorice type' smell under investigation at Poca, WV business

Posted: Updated:

WV Department of Environmental Protection says an all-too-familiar odor is under investigation. This time the odor came from Safety Kleen located in the Poca, WV industrial complex.

According to Tom Aluise, spokesman for the WV Department of Environmental Protection, said the "licorice-type" smell came from a tank that contained MCHM residue. The tank was originally from American Chemical Services located in Marmet, which is in eastern Kanawha County.

This recent investigation of a licorice type smell comes on the heels of a crude MCHM spill by Freedom Industries back on January, 9 2014 into the Elk River.

Aluise said the DEP had not yet issued any violations.

There is no word on what role the Department of Environmental Protection will play in the investigation or whether air quality tests were performed.
