Man Accused in Wheeling Island Shooting Pleads Guilty to Assault Charge, Attempted Murder Charge Dropped
A man accused of attempted murder and malicious assault on Wheeling Island in September of 2013 made his plea in court on Thursday.
Steven Kyle pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of malicious assault that he was facing in court on Thursday morning. The case stems from a shooting on Wheeling Island involving several men from Cleveland. When police were called to the scene on Vermont Street the night of September 21, they discovered a man had been shot several times after an altercation, and through investigations, police learned the culprit was allegedly Steven Clay Kyle.
Kyle was originally indicted on charges of attempted murder and malicious assault.
On Thursday, Kyle pleaded guilty to malicious assault and all other charges were dropped. Still, the state said they were pleased Kyle will face jail time.
Kyle has been behind bars in Ohio County since his arrest in October when police tracked him down in Alabama. He will get credit for time served. In court on Thursday, Kyle told the judge he "was sorry for what he did, and will use this as a learning experience."
