Man Who Allegedly Stole Steubenville Water Department Van, Seven Handguns Appears in Court
The man police say is responsible for a string of burglaries in Harrison and Jefferson Counties appeared in court on Wednesday, where he was officially charged with resisting arrest and receiving stolen property.
Michael Hawthorne, 31, allegedly stole a van from the Steubenville Water Department that he later smashed into the front door of Woods Grocery in Hopedale. Hawthorne also reportedly stole seven handguns from the Sportsman's Trading Post in Wintersville during his alleged crime spree.
At the time of Hawthorne's arrest, Jefferson County Sheriff Fred Abdalla said, "That's the bad thing about the guns being stolen. They're not being sold to good people they're being sold to the bad guys; the thieves the dope dealers the dope heads and what have you," the sheriff said. So there's seven guns stolen. so there's going to be seven guns on the streets of Steubenville."
His preliminary hearing is scheduled for April 30.
