The Wheeling Nailers, proud ECHL affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins and Montreal Canadiens, have announced their possible home dates and opponents for the Eastern Conference Semifinal Round of the 2014 Kelly Cup Playoffs.
Thanks to their 4-2 victory over the South Carolina Stingrays on Saturday, the Nailers earned their 11th playoff series win in team history, as well as their 50th win in 99 postseason contests. The triumph propelled Wheeling to what turned out to be a 4-0 series sweep - its first sweep of a best-of-seven series in the 22-year history of the team.
Individually, Mike Condon backstopped all four victories, as he improved his record to 8-0 in April, stopping 130 of 134 South Carolina shots. On the offensive side, Max MacKay led the way with six points, while he, Chaz Johnson, Tom Kuhnhackl, and Christiaan Minella each netted two goals.
The Nailers now await their opponent for round two, which will be determined either Tuesday or Wednesday, as the Kalamazoo Wings and Greenville Road Warriors conclude their best-of-seven series. Greenville currently leads the series 3-2, with the final two games taking place in Kalamazoo.
If Wheeling faces Greenville, the series will begin at WesBanco Arena on Saturday and Sunday, as the Nailers finished with the higher seed, earning home ice advantage. The Nailers and Road Warriors both finished the 2013-14 regular season with 84 points, but a 36-34 edge in non-shootout wins gave Wheeling the edge. The two teams met three times during the regular season, with the Nailers winning 5-3 on November 2nd and 5-2 on January 17th. Greenville's lone triumph was a 3-0 decision on January 18th.
If Wheeling faces Kalamazoo, the series will begin at Wings Stadium, but will make its way to the Ohio Valley for games three, four, and five on May 8th, 10th, and 11th. The Wings finished the campaign with 92 points, placing them second in the Eastern Conference. Although Kalamazoo came out on top 2-1 during the season series, two of the three games featured shootouts. On November 6th, the Wings won a 3-2 morning game at home, before grabbing a 3-1 win at WesBanco Arena on February 1st. The Nailers' lone victory came by a 3-2 score on January 31st at home.
