Bellaire Water Fails to Meet Treatment Requirements
The Bellaire public water system did not meet treatment requirements on four separate occasions this year, according to village administrators.
In a Thursday meeting, it was revealed that on February 1, 2, 3 and 4, the water treatment plant failed to use chlorine or a similar disinfectant to minimize the amount of lime in the water. Although chlorine quickly kills most bacteria, it is less effective in destroying viruses and parasites. For this reason, water needs to mix with chlorine for a longer period to kill such organisms.
Village officials emphasized that there was no need to boil water or take correction action. However, residents with specific health concerns were advised to consult their physician. People with compromised immune systems and the elderly may be at an increased risk.
An investigation is underway and village officials are working to correct the problem.
