UPDATE: Bellaire Schools Levy Fails for Eighth Time
In Tuesday night's election in Belmont County, the Bellaire school levy failed in its eighth attempt on the ballot. The measure lost by fewer than 200 votes.
The emergency levy was for 5.9 mills. A mill levy is an alternate term for a property tax rate. Mill levies, when multiplied by the value of the property being taxed, provide a property's annual tax liability.
Bellaire Schools have tried on different occasions to pass levies of various tax rates, but the only one which came close was last November's levy, which only failed by 186 votes. Bellaire Schools officials has said the money is needed for things such as technology and upgrading the bus fleet. On Tuesday night, they said they had their fingers crossed for the levy to pass.
Officials said they have not yet decided whether to try again in the next election.
