Higgins Relishes Role as Nailers Equipment Manager
Wheeling Nailers equipment manager Billy Higgins loves his job. He's been the man in charge of equipment for the past 11 years, and served as the assistant equipment manager for a few years before that.
And for his labor of love, Higgins has been selected as the Reebok ECHL Equipment Manager of the Year for 2013-2014.
"It's a cool things cause it's voted on by other equipment managers around the league,"said Higgins. "I'm pretty proud of it."
Higgins, 32, a Wheeling native, graduated from Wheeling Park High School in 1999.
"I've been around Nailers hockey my entire life, so winning this award is pretty cool."
Higgins works tirelessly, and is usually the first one to the rink and the last one to leave.
"It beats sitting behind a desk all day,"added Higgins, who hasn't missed a game since he took over, spanning over 800 games.
He has also suited up, as the Nailers' emergency goaltender, in over 100 games.
