All medical offices at Trinity West in Steubenville were evacuated on Wednesday morning due to a gas leak in a ravine east of the hospital.
According to witnesses on the scene, a strong odor of gas was evident in the rear parking lot of the hospital as Columbia Gas arrived on the scene to investigate the leak around 9 a.m. No one was permitted access to the medical office building and traffic was diverted away from the scene, while ambulance traffic was sent to other area facilities. Patients, however, were being allowed to be dropped off and picked up at the main building.
As of 10:30 a.m., gas was turned back on at the medical building, and the leak was isolated, however, all appointments and surgeries were canceled for the day. At noon, all buildings were cleared of any threat, however the leak had still not been found. Columbia Gas was continuing to check all lines between Trinity West and Mount Calvary Cemetery for the leak.
The incident comes just days after the staff was trained to react to such an event.
