Thieves Skip Cash, Rob Two St. Clairsville Gas Stations of $3,500 Worth of Cigarettes
ST. CLAIRSVILLE -
Two St. Clairsville gas stations were burglarized overnight Thursday, and the thieves apparently had only one target in mind- cigarettes.
Owners of the two stations, the Smith Sunoco station at the intersection of Route 40 and Route 331, and the Hilltop Sunoco on Route 40, arrived to work on Thursday morning to find thousands of dollars worth cigarettes stolen.
Bryan Smith, owner of the Smith Sunoco, said he had 64 cartons of cigarettes stolen worth $3,500, and said although the security cameras caught the thieves in the act, no clear image could be found because the suspects were covered from head to toe in dark clothing.
Smith said the suspects broke the glass in the front door and could be seen slithering on the floor to avoid triggering the security sensors. The thieves were only in the store for 20 seconds and crawled right back out through the same door.
Smith said the high price of cigarettes have made them more valuable than cash itself and said he will be adding bars to his glass doors. Anyone with information on the crime is asked to call the WTRF Lauttamus Security Crime Fighters tip line at 1-800-223-0312.
