The Wild Things (12-5) continued to showcase their deadly combination of stellar pitching and timely hitting as they defeated the Traverse City Beach Bums by a score of 3-2 Wednesday at Wuerfel Park. With the win, the Things’ collected their fifth straight road victory and their first series win against the Beach Bums in Traverse City since the 2009 season. As the Wild Things sit atop the Eastern Division with 12 wins and remain two games in front of the Evansville Otters, they will look to complete their third series sweep in the final game of the series on Thursday.
For the second straight night, the Wild Things, who are 9-1 when they score the first run of a game, were the first team to tally a run as third baseman Garrett Rau led off the second inning with a single and came around to score on catcher Jim Vahalik’s RBI single to right field.
The Beach Bums quickly answered in the bottom half of the same frame when catcher Chris Cowell hit an RBI double and left fielder Jeff DeBieux sliced an RBI single to put Traverse City in front 2-1.
But, in the top of the third, the home team quickly relinquished their short-lived lead as Washington outfielder CJ Beatty blasted his sixth home run of the season off Beach Bums starter Mike Devine to tie the game at two. Outfielder Stewart Ijames followed suit as he tattooed his fourth homer of the season, a solo shot, that stood to be the game-winning run as the Things’ went ahead and won their second straight game 3-2.
Washington starter Chris Phelan (3-1) earned his third win of the year as the former Schaumburg Boomers pitcher threw seven solid innings allowing just two runs off six hits. Beach Bums pitcher Mike Devine (1-3) was tagged with his third loss of the season giving up six hits and three runs in six innings. Closer Jonathan Kountis picked up his sixth save of the season for Washington.
