Wheeling native Corey Walter was drafted in the 28th round of the 2014 MLB Amateur Draft by the Oakland Athletics.
Walter, 21, pitched the past four seasons at West Virginia University, after graduating from Wheeling Park High School in 2010. He was also a standout for the Wheeling Post 1 American Legion team.
Walter (RHP) was used as a reliever and starting pitcher at WVU, and made over 20 career starts. He is the highest-drafted Wheeling native in recent memory, joining Wheeling Central's Noah Mull (Padres, 38th round, 2010) and Wheeling Park's J.J. Newman (Mets, 35th round 2006).
