UPDATE: Many Weirton Business Owners Not Pleased as B&O Tax Is Passed

Posted: Updated:
Many residents and local business owners were upset on Wednesday morning after a decision made Tuesday night by Weirton City Council.

During the meeting, city council voted to pass an ordinance for a business and occupation tax that will help the city out of a $1.6 million shortfall.
After a number of people took the stand voicing their concerns, council voted 3-2 to enact a business and occupation tax.

Residents and local businesses said they may have to leave the area now. Weirton resident Doug Jackson said, "I'm faced with now the fact that I now have to either lay people off or relocate my businesses outside the city of Weirton due to this."

George Romage, another Weirton resident, continued, "What kind of message does that show to people who will potentially come into this town and start a business when they know that there is a B&O tax possibly attached to their business also?"

Mayor George Kondik ended the special meeting by saying that he will be attending a home rule meeting on August 11 to see if the city has been accepted into the home rule program.
