Corrosive Chemical Leak Closes I-79 Welcome Center in Monongalia County
The West Virginia Welcome Center on I-79 in Monongalia County will be closed for several hours after a passerby noticed a tractor trailer was leaking corrosive materials.
Star City Volunteer Firefighters at the scene said the chemical was likely leaking from the back of a tractor trailer for 12 hours. They have not identified all of the materials, but said one chemical involved is potassium chloride.
Firefighters said the rest area will remain closed until crews from Miller Environmental clean up the corrosive material. The West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection and Division of Highways Hazmat Crew were also called to the scene.
Firefighters don't believe anyone came into contact with the materials before the leak was reported.
