All you have to to do is drive up Route 2 from Beech Bottom to Weirton to see the economic boom Brooke County is going through right now.

Business and Development Corporation Executive Director Pat Ford said recent numbers released show that Brooke County's unemployment has gone down almost four percent in the past five years, thanks to being in the heart of the Marcellus and Utica shale play, as well as a productive labor force and a prime location. Ford added that it also helps that the county has a rich heritage in the steel industry. Ford said, "All of that excitement has generated a lot of interest for people to want to do business in Brooke County and its really exciting to see that investment and its also really exciting to see the job numbers also."

Businesses such as Wheeling-Nisshin, who has invested almost $30 million into the county, preserving 175 jobs, continue to help decrease the unemployment rate. Other businesses like Rue 21, Eagle Manufacturing, businesses at the former Wheeling Corrugating plant and most recently, Barney's Bakery, continue to invest millions of dollars into Brooke County.
