Possible Deadly Situation in Ohio County Defused by Wheeling Police
Wheeling Police officers defused what could have been a deadly situation in Ohio County early Friday morning.
Police responded to a home on Wheeling Island a little before midnight, and they found a man in a desperate state holding on to a large loaded shotgun.
Chief Shawn Schwertfeger says it was a somewhat typical call but quickly turned dangerous for everyone involved.
"When you involve the individuals who are suffering from a mental illness who are actually armed, it makes it an extremely dangerous situation. But every call that police officers go on, there are weapons involved because they carry them to those calls, so, those types of situations are very dangerous," Schwertfeger said.
Chief Schwertfeger says a struggle ensued over the weapon but by police talking the man out of the situation and with a little help from a taser, they were able to defuse the situation.
The man was taken into custody but is not facing any charges.
