A fire equipment manufacturer's recall has caused one local fire department to activate contingency plans.
The Wheeling Fire Department received news this week that their Sutphen ladder truck needed taken out of service due to a problem with its ladder. Dublin, Ohio-based Sutphen Corporation recalled certain ladder truck models with five-stage ladders due to a potential safety issue.
Wheeling's chief firefighter said he appreciates their approach to that safety issue. "The company's been very open with us about the problem that they have. It only affects a certain amount of these types of vehicles, and ours happens to be one of the types affected," said Chief Larry Helms.
Helms said the department's older LaFrance ladder truck would go into service to keep the city safe while Sutphen makes repairs to Wheeling's "Ladder One."
