The government has filed suit to collect the nearly $1 million the Internal Revenue Services says a Bridgeport business owes in employment taxes and penalties.

The suit, filed in U.S. District Court in Clarksburg, claims Alert Environmental Contracting and its president and sole shareholder, Timothy L. Callison, have flouted federal tax laws by failing to file and pay federal employment and unemployment tax returns over the last 12 years.

According to the complaint, the company owes more than $600,000 in employment and unemployment taxes, plus another $200,000-plus in penalties.

The government claims Alert has not filed a corporate income tax return since 2005 or its federal unemployment taxes since 2010, and that Callison hasn’t filed an individual income tax return since 2005.

The complaint asks the court to enjoin Alert’s continued operation “subject to a responsible winding-up period to address environmental issues” and to bar Callison “from conducting any business having any employees” for at least five years. It also asks that Callison be barred from operating any business in future which disguises employees as “independent contractors” in order to evade employment tax liabilities, and that he be required to file all past-due individual and corporate tax returns.
