Goal Posts Erected at Busy Weirton Intersection to Honor Athletes

Posted: Updated:
WEIRTON - There's been a lot of talk recently in one local community about field goal posts that have popped up at the corner of a busy intersection in Weirton.

Just this week, one of the goal posts from the old Jimmy Carey Stadium showed up on the corner of Weir Avenue and Cove Road. This has everyone asking causing - why?  Weirton Area Chamber of Commerce President Brenda Mull says the idea is to honor former Weirton athletes who have made it professionally.  She said, "Once we realized the goal posts were available and they had a new stadium, we decided why not use the goal posts instead of just putting a sign there? Why not use the goal posts and make it something really different?"

The goal post that is already erected is one of two - Mull says they haven't chosen a spot for the second one yet. There will be an unveiling of the finished project on Saturday, August 23, with the help of the Weirton Museum.
